Isle-sur-La Sorgue

During my recent trip to Egalières, I took a side trip to one of the largest and most well-known markets for antiques, the town of Isle-sur-La Sorgue. Famous also for its large, moss-covered water wheels, this town is a must see, with its crystal clear river running through the town’s center and the beautiful building of the Caisse d’Epargne bank.  So, what did I buy?  Well, I almost bought a beautiful, oval, gold, baroque-style mirror (no photos allowed and there was an employee staged there), but even with a small discount, it was pricey.  That being said, I still see the mirror and hope it will go out of my mind soon!

Souleiado Boutique

Tarascon is a town in Provence, where I stopped to visit the Souleiado workshop located there.  The brand name is known for the flamboyant prints and colors of its Provençal fabrics, also displayed in tableware, home decoration items, and ready-to-wear clothing. This small factory also makes dipped-wax candles/tapers used in churches – a declining art.  Everything was beautiful, very nicely presented, and the service was friendly and helpful.

Tour de France… or Bust!

For me, it was “bust” as I arrived after the bikers whizzed through the town of Cagnes-sur-Mer.  Not to be totally missed, though, I did capture a few photos “en esprit” and experienced “le feeling” among the crowd during the lunch hour.  I ate at a local restaurant/café called Dolce Café – bust again, as they were out of the “plat du jour” due to the crowds by the time I arrived, but the “a la carte” menu was varied and the meal was good!

2013 Nice Jazz Festival — July 8-12

March 19, 2013 – The city of Nice will go jazz crazy this summer with performances from internationally renowned industry names

The official line up for the Nice Jazz Festival:  The summer event will welcome some of the biggest names in the jazz industry to the city. Tens of thousands are expected to attend the musical extravaganza to see, among others, performances from 10-time Grammy winner George Benson, Ben Harper, Esperanza Spalding and all time legends Earth, Wind & Fire.

All time legends of the 70s, Earth, Wind and Fire will be in Nice for the festival this summer

Artistic Director of the Nice Jazz Festival Sébastien Vidal said the Nice Jazz Festival acts as a mainstage for both international and national artists alike. “We wanted to emulate and embrace every genre, style and generation, all while offering Riviera artists their rightful place alongside international stars.”

The Nice city council is organising the festival from 8th to 12th of July, promising five summer evenings of pure immersion in all things jazz. Last year, some 35,000 visitors from all over the world made their way to the Riviera capital to witness the spectacular event, and even larger crowds are expected this time around.

It was Nice that held the first ever world Jazz Festival in 1948, and it’s Nice that continues the tradition today, welcoming international and national jazz talents to the Placa Massèna stage for five contrasting musically themed nights: trance, tempo, energy, breath and vibration.

Local star André Ceccarelli, an undeniable fixture of the jazz world, is particularly proud of the local festival, “Nice is my city, my roots and my culture. Jazz is my life, my soul and my passion. The festival is every colour, and music bursts out of it.”

Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi joined in the optimism, saying “The new 2013 edition of the Nice Jazz Festival…will no doubt unleash plenty of surprises and promises a rich and emotional event characterised by rhythm and elegance”.

Tickets costs 35 euros and more information in English can be found HERE.

The Programme:

Monday 8th: It’s trance night with performances from Guillaume Perret, Christian Scott, Jon Baptiste and Eric Legenini. Highlights include performances from Earth, Wind & Fire and André Ceccarelli.

Tuesday 9th: This night will bring the tempo with Stéphane Belmondo, Lianne la Havas, Ben Harper, Nice Jazz Orchestra, Manu Katché Quartet and international wonder Robert Glasper Experiment, who has just won the 2013 Grammy Award for best R&B album.

Wednesday 10th: For an evening of energy, don’t miss Wednesday – with Kellylee Evans, J, Stéphane Chausse, the Gerald Clayton Sextet and the Youn Sun Nah quartet. Exciting performances included from the appropriately named John Legend, who’s just 25 years old and already has nine grammy awards, as well as C2C, four-time champions of the world Disco Mix Club.

Thursday 11th: For the intriguingly titled ‘breath’ evening – José James, Raphaël Gualazzi, Etienne M’Bappé, Omer Avital Band of the East and Chick Corea & the Vigil will take the stage. Musical legend Maceo Parker, king of the groove genre, will also make an appearance.

Friday 12th: To finish on a high note, the last evening will follow the theme of ‘vibrations’ with artists Tigran – Shadow Theatre, Pedrito Martinez, Vainqueur for the Tremlin Off and Shai Maestro Trio. Esperanza Spalding, up and coming American talent with two Grammies already to her name and George Benson, winner of 10 Grammy Awards, are the main highlights for the grand finale.

l’Univers Restaurant in Nice

I really enjoyed my first cooking class with this restaurant’s Michelin-star chef, master chef Cristian Pumailso decided to have a second go ’round to learn even more!  With a master chocolatier making dessert on one side of the large kitchen, we were busy prepping the food for the day’s delicious lunch, as follows:

A starter of omelette avec de la poutine (tiny fish-a regional specialty), a main course of veal with des legumes, and of course, chocolate for dessert.  Champagne as an apero and wines during lunch, bien sûr!  The restaurant holds the cooking classes (conducted in French) on Saturday mornings for a limited-size group – reserve early.

Croisette signI have been to Cannes many times and have actually watched the International Fireworks Competition from a boat in the bay of Cannes – it was absolutely mesmerizing!
